I sincerely hope that if intelligent, extraterrestrial life wanders into our tiny arm of the Milky Way galaxy, the first radio transmissions of music they intercept will be of Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, Benny Carter, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, and the rest of the musical pioneers of that era. If aliens’ first impression of our culture were to be what plays on most radio and television stations today, they’re almost certain not to waste their time.
