How To Pick A Domain Name For Your Business

So you are ready to create your first website or maybe add another one to your internet marketing arsenal. Well before you just ask your spouse or friends what they think you should name your domain read the ideas in this article.The first thing you should think about is what is the name of your web site, and be sure to match it with your domain name. For example if your web site is named Jelly Beans try to buy a domain name that has the words jelly beans in it. Something like MyJellyBeans dot com or WhoLovesJellyBeans dot com.
My guess is the site jellybeans dot com is taken. Ok let’s move on to how to pick a domain name.
Common name or use a brand name?
Your biggest obstacle will be getting the names that you are thinking of using. Most of the generic names like cars dot com and houses dot com are taken. Some may be available for sale but it will cost you an arm and a leg.
I don’t like the idea of using a brand name because they are trademarked or a copy write so you legally can’t use them. For example a domain named MyMicroSoft dot com would for sure bring on a law suit.
But do not fret; there are lots of other household names you can use.
Words like party, beer, wine and food are all words that are not owned by anyone. There are many different names that are still being created from the typical household names.
Hyphenated Names?
There are times when you have the perfect name that is taken and you may have to think about using hyphens in the name to make it unique.
The best thing about hyphens is the keywords will be separated and it will make it easier for the search engines to distinguish your keywords better.
The reasons that I don’t like hyphens is many people will forget the hyphens and also when someone tells someone else about your site they can easily leave out the hyphens when telling them. The biggest problem with these reasons is that the people can type in the name without the hyphens and land on your competitor’s site.
Short or Long Domain Names?
This is a topic that can go either way as far as I’m concerned. Today it is very difficult to get a short and meaningful domain name. Most people are forced to settle with a longer name.
I would rather pick a long name instead of using an abbreviation. You should use discountshoesandhandbags dot com instead of dsah dot com.
This is actually easier to remember and it has all the right keywords to the search engines.
Using Plurals, “The”, and “My” Forms of your Domain Name
Many times when you are trying to buy a domain and the name is not available, the registrar will suggest alternate forms of the name you typed. For example, if you wanted www. Toy dot com, and it was taken, they will suggest forms like:
Thetoy dot com
mytoy dot com
toys dot com
Ok you say but these are not the names I wanted. Well unfortunately you are going to have to settle for something else. I have been noticing that many sites now have the prefix “My” or “The” and I don’t think it is a bad idea of naming your site.
Just make sure when advertising your site use the full name like MyFreeCoffee dot com not just FreeCoffee dot com. I’m good to go with the use of “My” and “The” but you have to be careful with the plural form of some domain names.
That one letter “s” can be a real problem for certain domain names. Many people will make the mistake of forgetting the “s” at the end so be careful with your name selection.
COM, BIZ, INFO, etc?
We are all familiar with the extension com (represents the word “commercial”) as it is the most widely used extension in the world. Most businesses prefer a .com domain name because it is a highly recognized symbol for having a business presence on the Internet.
Most people will automatically type .com when entering a web site name into their browser. So your first choice should be .com.
But what about all the other domain extensions? Yes , there are many other extensions like BIZ ( used for small business Web sites), INFO (signifies a “resource” web site) and ORG (represents the word “organization,” primarily used by non-profits groups or trade associations).
There are also country specific extensions like .uk.com (for the United Kingdom) and many other types of extensions that you will probably never need to use.
Conclusion
Well there you have it as clear as mud. Before you go and buy any domain names do your due diligence first. Look at others websites domain names and see how they have used some of these ideas when picking their name.
Write down your ideas and play around with the order of the words in your domain name. See if the name is something that is easy to say or type.
